Luuk van Middelaar is a political theorist and historian. From 2010 until 2014, he worked as chief speechwriter and advisor to European Council President Herman Van Rompuy. The author of the prizewinning The Passage to Europe, he recently published Alarums and Excursions, a ground-breaking account of the Union’s crisis politics.
