Progressive Pod on the renaissance of populism in Europe and the decline of social democracy

In her latest book “Democracy and Dictatorship in Europe”, Professor Sheri Berman provides a new understanding of the development of democracy and dictatorship in Europe over the long period from the Ancien Régime to the present day. During this podcast interview, Alain Bloëdt, Editor-in-Chief of the Progressive Post, asks Berman about the lessons we should learn regarding the renaissance of populism in Europe and the role played by social democrats. Bloëdt and Berman also talk about the decline of social democracy and trade unions in Europe, as well as the ways to win election around economic instead of social issues. Elections could also be won around the so-called Left coalition – which could be seen as an opportunity to win an election or as a deep and long-term commitment.

Securing democracy in the Western Balkans by strengthening the rule of law

In its new methodology of the accession process, the EU has defined the rule-of-law as one of its fundamentals simnce 2020, underlining its importance as a core European value. All countries of the Western Balkan, despite reform efforts in the past and present, are struggling with organised crime and corruption, clientelism in their institutions, a weak judiciary and low trust of citizens in the system. The poor condition of the rule of law undermines the public’s trust in the effectiveness of democracy. In the long run, this can have disastrous effects on the democratic consolidation in the Western Balkans.
